Hearing Officers serve as neutral factfinders who review evidence, hear testimony, and make decisions regarding a Respondent’s responsibility.  Their role is to ensure that hearings are conducted fairly, respectfully, and in accordance with University Policy. 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Preside over and conduct live virtual proceedings in a structured and orderly manner 
  • Decide what information and questions are relevant in each hearing 
  • Listen to testimony from parties and witnesses  
  • Review documentation for reliability and relevance 
  • Oversee procedural compliance, timelines, and participation 
  • Prepare formal written decisions that explain outcomes and reasoning 

Hearing Officers Do Not 

  • Investigate or gather evidence 
  • Provide legal advice 
  • Represent or advise any party

Hearing Officers are entrusted with matters that may significantly impact individuals and the UNM community.  Hearing Officers are expected to act with professionalism, objectivity, and respect.  Hearing Officers complete ongoing training and remain informed on applicable University policies to ensure consistency and competence.
